***HAPPY ONAM CRICKET WORLD***

Post by Nick on Mon 13 Aug 2012, 11:25 pm

The tenth and the most important day of Onam celebrations is known as Thiru Onam or the Tiru Onam. HereThiru or Tiru stands for sacred, holy, beautiful or auspicious and is equivalent of 'Sri' in Hindi. It is so called as the day is the most significant of all, for the people of Kerala. People believe that it is on thetenth day that Lord Mahabali comes to visit his people.
Some scholars say that the name Thiru Onam comes from the name Sravanotsav out of which 'Sra' was taken out and 'vana' was transformed to 'Onam'. To the word Onam, 'Thiru' was added as the asterism Sravana on which Onam is celebrated was sacred to Lord Vishnu.
Elaborate preparations are made to celebrate Thiru Onam in the grandest possible way. Early in the morning people perform special prayers to invoke divine blessings. Women clean up the house and decorate a flower mat in the front courtyard of the house. This is to welcome the spirit of the legendary King who is somuch appreciated by his people centuries after his golden reign.
A grand meal called Onasadya is also prepared to impress upon the spirit of the King that his people are happy and wish him well. Thiru Onam evenings are spent playing games and indulging in cultural events. Lightening and dazzling display of fire also takes place with much fan fair

Another Story of King Mahabali & Vamana Another legend has it that King Mahabali was a devout worshipper of Lord Vishnu. He was sincere, honest, just and a good ruler. But he had one weakness — ego. And to eradicate his pride and redeem his beloved devotee of this one sin, Vishnu came to earth in the form of adwarf Brahmin named Vamana.
The king in his pride asked the Brahmin what he wanted for he could give anything. Vamana asked for three paces of land and the king agreed. To humble him Vishnu, as Vamana showed Mahabali that he is just a puny creature in front of God's universal stature.
Mahabali, who was a man of principles, realized God's purpose andoffered his head for Vamana's footstep, as he was sent to another world. This fatal step proved a blessing in disguise for the good king— the foot salvaged and released him from the recurrent cycle of birth and death. That is why Onam is celebrated by wearing new clothes and resolving to lead a new life of truth, piety, love, and humility.

A long long time ago, an Asura (demon) king called Mahabali ruled Kerala. He was a wise, benevolent and judicious ruler and beloved of hissubjects. Soon his fame as an able king began to spread far and wide, but when he extended his rule to theheavens and the netherworld, the gods felt challenged and began to fear his growing powers. Presuming that he might become over-powerful, Aditi, the mother of Devas pleaded with Lord Vishnu to curtail Mahabali's powers. Vishnu transformed himself into a dwarf called Vamana and approached Mahabali while he was performing a yajna and asked for alms. Pleased with the dwarf brahmin's wisdom, Mahabali granted him a wish. The Emperor's preceptor, Sukracharya warned him against making the gift, for he realized that the seeker was no ordinary person. But the Emperor's kingly ego was boosted tothink that God had asked him for a favor. So he firmly declared that there is no greater sin than going back on one's promise. He kept his word.
The Vamana asked for a simple gift — three paces of land — and the kingagreed to it. Vishnu in the guise of Vamana then increased his stature and with the first step covered the sky, blotting out the stars, and with the second, straddled the netherworld. Realising that Vamana's third step will destroy the earth, Mahabali offered his head as the last step.
Vishnu's fatal third step pushed him to the netherworld, but before banishing him to the underworld Vishnu granted him a boon. Since he was attached to his kingdom and his people, he was allowed to return once a year from exile. Onam is the celebration that marks the homecoming of King Mahabali. It is the day when a grateful Kerala pays a glorious tribute to the memory of this benign king who gave his all for his subjects.

Chingam (August – September) is the first month in the Malayalam calendar used in Kerala. The first day of Chingam is the beginning of the New Year according to the Malayalam calendar and is locally referred as (Andu Pirappu). In 2012, Chingam 1 falls on August 17. The first day is welcomed by special pujas and people in large numbers visit the temples. The day is of great significance to the farmers.

As per Malayalam calendar, Kolla Varsham 1188 (the Malayalam year) begins on August 17. The Malayalam Panchangam for the year is also released in this month.

Onam the most popular festival of Malayalis is observed in this month. The month is considered highly auspicious and numerous marriages and other ceremonies take place in the month.

Sri Krishna Jayanti and Ganesh Chaturthi are also observed in this month.

Special schemes and several new initiatives are made in the agricultural sector in this month.

It must be noted that Vishu (April 14 or 15 - the first day of Medam Month in Malayalam calendar) is also celebrated as New Year day by Malayalis and it is the zodiac New Year. The first month in a Malayalam calendar is Chingam.

Today is uthradam , the first day of onam otherwise called"onnam onam ". Uthradam day of chingam month is celebrated as first onam and thiruonam day of chingam month is second onam or"Thiruonam". Uthradam is the last day of shopping for onam . On the day of uthradam people used to buy as much as things they want to celebrate and enjoy"Thiruonam". Today keralites will be buying vegetables and groceries to prepare feast for thiruonam day. For every keralites like me, to have a traditionaly and homely made onam feast is a must on thiruonam day. So the shopping on uthradam day is"uthrada pachil"and the market on uthradam day is called"uthrada chantha".
